PROFILE OF MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS

   
   

I am a Principal Curator (Archaeology) and Director of Museum and House of Culture and a holder of Ph.D and M.A in Anthropology (Brown University-U.S.A), and B.Sc in Geology from University of Dar es Salaam. I have extensive experience in cultural consultancies such as the famous UNESCO’s Slave Trade routes Project in Tanzania, served as a Lead Consultant to the design and installation of exhibits at three Antiquities sites (Caravan Serai, Kolo and Isimila) and have conducted Environmental Impact Assessment studies (cultural heritage).Currently I am the Project Manager for establishment of a House of Culture at the National Museum and House of Culture, a project funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and    
       
       
       
       
       
   

Dr. Paul J Msemwa

   
   

the Government of Tanzania. Furthermore I have made substantial contributions to preservation of Tanzanian cultural heritage through research, collection management, exhibition design and publications. I have conceived, developed, planned, and executed many conferences, workshops and training courses and had served as external examiner for Archaeology; History Department, University of Dar es Salaam. With 26 years experience, I have focussed on community involvement and my efforts in this field have been recognized Internationally. I am a member of several professional associations including The International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Council of African Museum (AFRICOM) and Samp - an International NGO for museum networking for which Iam the Chairperson of the Executive Commettee (2010 - 2011)

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
   

           
   

Amandus Kweka has been working with the National Museum of Tanzania since 1991 as a Curator in Archeology. As a Head of the department, he has been in charge of all archaeological, geological and pale ontological collections housed at the National Museum. He has been participating in different research programs concerning coastal archaeology, paleontology geology as well as human origin. He fully participated in the Wembere-Mangonga Pale ontological expeditions in collaboration with the New York University from 1992-95. He was also involved in similar expeditions in Eyasi Basin between 1998 and 2004 as Vertebrate Paleontologist.

   
       
       
       
       
       
   

Dr. Amandus P. Kweka

   
   

Between 2006 and 2008 he was fully involved in archeological investigations on the coast of Lindi and Mtwara regions as part of the PhD program. This is the first research of its kind on that region, which otherwise have been unexplored archaeologically. The research has reported quite interesting new discoveries, especially on the Late Holocene stone-age settlements. It has also showed settlements at Kilwa Island dating to the 8th c AD. This is the oldest known sedentary settlements along the eastern coast of Africa.      

 

   
       
       
       
       
                 
   

Ms. Adelaide SALLEMA is currently working as a Senior Curator in Biology Unit at the Museum and House of Culture stationed in Dar es Salaam. She holds MSc. in Environmental Science with a special focus on mangrove restoration and BSc. with Education from the University of Dar es Salaam. She worked as a research assistant with National Environmental Mangement Council (NEMC) between August and December 2003 and came up with a report entitled, “Environmental Factors Affecting Growth Rate of Terebralia palustris in Mbweni Mangrove Forest, Dar es Salaam.” Previously,she worked as a field biologist and as a consultant with US based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) formally NZS between January and June 2003 and participated in writing a report entitled, “The Dugong in Tanzania:    
       
       
       
       
       
       
   

Adelaide Sallema

   
   

A National Assessment of Status, Distribution and Threat.” Her duties and responsibilities as a Senior Curator include documentation of biological collections, institute procedures for proper management of collections in storage, carry out research and publish in area of specialization, popularize research findings through newspapers, articles and development of exhibitions and report writing. She studied courses relating to environment and has written articles concerning environment and natural resources management. She has also skills in monitoring and participated in consultancy works including evaluation of plans, preparing project proposals and reviewing project documents. She attended various workshops including LFA, communication, biodiversity management and project negotiation. She currently holds memberships of Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) since 2004, Association of Friends of Museum and House of Culture since 2007, Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania (WCST) since 2009 and World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) since 2009.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
                 
   

I work at the museum as a Coordinator of Programmes and Head of Education Unit and  I am responsible for planning, development, organization, implementation  and evaluation of Museum’s  programmes, resources, policy and strategy.  Previously I was collections Coordinator at the same museum. I’m a holder of M.Sc.  in  Entomology  and also a malacologist and have done extensive research on the Biodiversity and taxonomy of Land snails of East Africa. I am a Senior Curator and Head of the Ethnography Department in the Museum and House of Culture (National Museum of Tanzania. I am a holder of M.A. in Anthropology (Witwatersrand University) and B. A. General in Archaeology, Geography and Sociology from the University of Dar Es Salaam. I am also trained in computer skills, philosophy, communication skills as well as designing an interpretation, conservation, management and presentation plan of heritage sites. I have experience in research in various disciplines including anthropology, archaeology, sociology and education as well as monitoring and evaluation of various projects.

My work experience lies most on cultural heritage such as Coordinating the Heritage Care and Consultancy Trust (Heritage Consult Trust), Site Manager of Isimila and Kalenga (Mkwawa’s Museum) - Iringa as well as Mbozi (Meteorite) under  the custodian of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism,

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
   

Achiles M. Bufure

   
         
    Part Time Lecturer at the Open University of Tanzania on African Prehistory and Archaeology of Tanzania, Coordinating the Rock Art exhibition organized by the Trust for African Rock Art (TARA) and the National Museum of Tanzania, preparing a Management Plan and the Presentation of the Doornhoek Rock Art Site, South Africa and participation in designing an interpretation of the presentation of the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, Limpopo, South Africa as well as a Committee member of the Kondoa (Rock Art ) Community Project. I am an employee of the National Museum of Tanzania, currently stationed at the Museum and House of Culture in Dar es salaam as a Conservator. I am a holder of Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Business Information Technology from University of Portsmouth as well as a Diploma in Conservation Management from the University of London.

My responsibility in the museum extends from caring for integrity of collections to the technical conception, planning and delivery of new exhibitions. Jackson N. L. Washa

   
   

With the ongoing project of establishing museum and House of Culture, I work as Construction Liaison Officer; assisting the project manager with matters pertaining to the construction of museum buildings.

 My experience in museum practices dates back to 1987. I have participated in various exhibition design and construction projects, documentation of collections assignments, curation of hominid fossils and training of museum experts. Ms. Magreth Method. Mapunda is currently working as a Curator-History at the Museum and House of Culture in Dar es Salaam. She holds B.A. in Archaeology from the University of Dar es Salaam.

She worked as a Research assistant on Tourism Master Plan for Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara World Heritage Site in 2004, with Antiquity Department 0f the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

In 2006 she worked as a Research Assistant on the Myths and Legends of Dugong along the Coastal Region the research was funded by Museum and House of Culture.
   
       
       
       
       
       
       
   

Magreth M. Mapunda

   
   

In 2009 she researched on the History of Foot ball in Tanzania with the Museum and House of Culture in collaboration with Tanzania Football Association.

She worked as a research assistant in Archaeological Survey and Excavation in Rukwa Region with California Chico State University of U.S.A. between July and August 2004.

Her duties and responsibilities as a Curator include documentation of Historical collections, institute procedures for proper management of collections in storage, carry out research and publish. Development  of exhibitions and report writing. She studied courses relating to Culture Heritage Management and has written report concerning Heritage Management. She has also skills in customer care and participated in consultancy works including preparing project proposals .She attended various workshops including   Communication, Customer Care, Innovative Museum Marketing Money Museum in Africa and the Millennium workshop on Culture Heritage of Tanzania. She attended courses in evaluation, conflict resolution and networking method, also Public Procurement Acts and Regulations training. I am a Tanzanian girl; My name is Anamery Bagenyi and I was born on 2nd July 1981 at Kayanga Village, Karagwe District, Kagera Region in Tanzania.I had my primary education at Kayanga Primary School in Karagwe from 1990-1996. Then I joined Karagwe Secondary School for my Ordinary level studies from 1997-2000. After that I joined Mawenzi High School for Advanced Secondary Education from 2001-2003. In advanced studies I studied History, Kiswahili and English Language subjects. Later In 2004 I joined the University of Dar es salaam taking Bachelor of Arts with Education (History and Kiswahili); History being my major subject. I completed my first degree on 28th May 2008. Anamaery Bagenyi

   
   

Before my current occupation I used to work as a Researcher assistant and a teacher. In 2004 I worked with the Karagwe District Council in Poverty Analysis and the level of development in Karagwe District. From June to September 2005 I worked as a History and Kiswahili teacher at Karagwe Secondary School. From October 2005 to December 2005 I worked as a Researcher Assistant on Cattle bi-products and it’s Market in Karagwe District. In 2006 I worked as a History and Kiswahili teacher at Bukoba Secondary School and in May 2007 I worked as a Researcher Assistant in Research and Disseminating results in Kibaha, Chalinze and Bagamoyo District in Pwani Region.    

Apart from my current occupation at the Museum and House of Culture; I am working with the Karagwe District Council Administration in restoration of the Banyambo (Native Karagwe people) Tradition Museum and other destroyed cultural heritage.

Sixmund J.  Begashe was born in 1977 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. He is currently the  Sound Technician and Designer of the National Museum and House of Culture, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Before that he was Tutor at Bagamoyo College of Arts, teaching  sound engineering and recording Techniques. In 2002, he received his Diploma  in Arts at     Bagamoyo College of Arts and later 2004, his Diploma in Sound Engineering at Stavanger University, Norway. He spent some time as part of his professional for Video recording and interviews of  Tanzanian traditional dances and Music in Mwanza, Shinyanga, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Morogoro, Tanga, Dodoma, Coastal Kagera, Musoma, Manyara and Tanga Regions (2007 – 2009),in 2005 video editing subtitles and sound of video presentation of Tanzania’s national participation in World summit on the information Society( WSIS), Tunis and Novembber 14 – 21 2005, He worked in Video recoding of activities of the Tanzanian delegation at the summit, including ICT exhibition
