The museum has a big research collection acquired from researches conducted in the country over a long period of time. The Leakey’s collection from Olduvai and Laetoli which for a very long time had been kept at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi, now are back to Tanzania at the National Museum and House of Culture. Materials from on-going research at Olduvai are still at the site and some at Natural History Museum, Arusha. Otherwise, the Museum and House of Culture has:-

     
         
         
         
     

• Most of the Hominids, Paleontological and Archaeological Collection from Mary Leakey’s work at Olduvai and Laetoli sites;

• Collection from Wembere Manonga Paleontological Expedition (WMPE) (Harrison et al) since 1990 – 1996 and 2006;

• Collection from Eyasi Plateau – Laetoli Paleontological Expedition 1998 – 2005 (Harrison et al);

• Archaeological collections from Studies of the Southeastern Coast, Coastal and hinterland of Tanzania, e.g. Neville Chittick, F. Chami, Kweka and others;

• Unique ethnographic and photographic records collected from late 1890’s to the 20th century AD;

• District Record Books (Manuscripts generated during British Colonial period); and

• Architectural maps of German buildings

• Invertebrate Zoology collections (aquatic and terrestrial) from Dsm and Coastal Region in 2008-2009 (by Bruno Nyundo et al)

• Invertebrate zoology collections (marine) from Dsm and Coastal region in 1990 -2006 (by Museum professionals and UDSM Aquatic Department students).

• Insect collection from Dsm and Coastal region in 1970 -1981 (by Museum professionals and UDSM students).

• Butterfly and bird species collections from Malangali and Usambara Mountains Expeditions in 1940-1942 and 1926 respectively from the work of Loveridge.

• Bird species collection from Usambara Mountains Expedition since 1800s and from 1870 -1881 from the work of Speke, Grant and Sir John Kirk.
